Human Life ( last talk by Ven. K. Sri Dhammananda) , Maha Vihara 7.7.2006)

Received this through an email circulated by the Buddhist community in Penang, Malaysia.

"Dear devotees actually I never thought I would have the chance to see and talk to you , half of my body is dead, but my heart , my mind still has energy .

What is this diseased body , is it life? Its not life , its the house , life is the energy , mental , kammic and cosmic all joined together as "energy ", that is life .

Body is decayed and life goes away . Actually we must be happy when time comes to depart without suffering , to crave so much for the body , we spend our whole life decorating , looking after it , one day it decays and when energy and the elements dissipate then mental energy will build another house . Life started with mental energy and then birth occurs . Every single child cries , none smiles after birth . Life is suffering we are using whole amounts of energy to maintain this physical body , but one day we have to depart .Then leaves solidity and fluidity ~ 2 elements only , heat and motion has gone .

Christians and Muslims are particular about the body as they believe in resurrection , we do not believe that there is anything in this physical body . Spend thousands on funerals , but the departed never get anything. Only way to support the departed , you must know how to make use of this life , that is why religion is needed to help us to cultivate compassion , sympathy and kindness and supporting others .

David Morris sent me a letter , he said there are 2 reasons to be happy as an old man ,

(1) he will be free from pain and suffering .

(2) Ever since he became a Buddhist he has tried his best to maintain and uphold the 5 precepts , if there is another life it won't be an unfortunate one as he departs with confidence .

In the end the dying man takes no solace in dancing and singing , only meritorious deeds will you get confidence and this will support the karmic energy in the rebirth . Must know how to handle life , by doing service to others to help release their suffering . Many die with fear and confusion in mind , can't take rebirth in upper realm.

Meditation is important to maintain purity .

Prince Siddharta when he was born there were 5 astrologers invited to predict his fate, 4 said that he would either grow up to be a sage or monarch . Last one said definitely a sage . When craving and attachment is completely removed , mind is then completely pure .This body is not life . Its a house built by energy and 4 cosmic elements. Unfortunately in the past 2500 years , Buddhists in Asia have introduced a lot of rites and rituals, never introduced by the Buddha. Just keep away from evil by reducing anger, jealousy enmity , try to do meritorious deeds, try to develop the mind through understanding. Try to purify the mind .

If you are cruel, hot tempered or stingy try your best to take this out . If you pray to God to take this out do you think God can do that? Buddha can't also , but he can tell you how to do that . War is declared by the human mind, peace also comes from our minds , not from heaven nor from God .

First by understanding without believing , when you develop a right understanding , then you can carry on a religious way of life . When you doubt , you think, investigate, accept or reject. Others say if there is doubt, then God will punish you .

All over the world different schools have sprung up and they follow their own traditions which they have maintained for a long time . Buddha had rejected old traditions , but it was introduced to the primitive narrow minded people . People in Asian countries don't study the dharma .

Next, do Good . Reduce the anger and do something to train the mind through right understanding . Change the mind , through your own experience you can understand right and wrong .

I have been in Malaysia for 53 years , used to have even no room to sleep. The Chinese were the main Buddhists here and through Buddhist societies we made them understand what Buddhism is .

My mind mental and life energy is still active but I am half way dead , you must know how to do this .

Although the end of my life is now near , I have no fear .

Arahants can disconnect mind from body to experience nibbanic bliss and at that time you cannot tell if they are dead or alive , their bodies are still warm and their complexions will remain ruddy . They can do that for 1 week at the most .

Remember there are 4 kinds of happiness :

(1) Happiness of Possession - In owing your own property , your house , land , business , bank account.

(2) Happiness of Enjoyment - Using what you have earned you can enjoy good food , nice house, nice dress without abusing, bluffing, cheating others.

(3) Happiness of Debtlessness - Try best not to borrow from others , spend within your own means , you gain self respect .

(4) Happiness of Blamelessness - Try to lead life without doing harm to anybody .

These 4 kinds of happiness must be with you . Don't be lazy do some work , do not neglect what you have earned, maintain and protect what you have earned , then you can decide what to do including adopting a Buddhist way of life up to arahant , know how to adjust your way of life , how to associate with others , who are they ?Associate with good people ,not harmful wicked people.

Support your faither and mother ,look after your wife and children, don't neglect relatives, help them. Develop your mind to the extent that you are not shaken by the 8 winds of change:

praise

blame

fame

shame

gain

loss

pleasure

pain

and treat all the same , then at this stage nothing will affect you ."

Quotes:

All meetings end in partings.

That which rises must fall

That which is collected will be dispersed

Birth ends with death

"It is easy enough to be pleasant when life flows by like a song. But the man worthwhile is one who will smile when everything goes dead wrong."

---Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Sabbe dhamma nalam abhinivesaya

All phenomena should NOT be clung to as "I", "My" or "Mine".

Sorry bout the grammar mistakes and the paragraphings, didn't edit much, maintained the original post.

On a side note, though the concept of God, Christianity and Muslim faiths have been brought up in this article, there is no intention of offending nor putting down other faiths. I believe generally the practice of respecting each other, regardless of perspective differences, race and religion, should be cultivated by everyone.

Hope this post will bring wisdom and happiness to all.

E. MSG

Hello people, please be advised that tomorrow's Sharing and Bonding session is set at 1.00pm!
Please be punctual !

My fellow capt.'s, remember to update your house members!

A WALL IS A WALL. A WALL. JUST A WALL.

That wall is what I call, a reflection wall.

The Wall.

I gave myself 10 minutes (using the alarm on my phone in case I doze off), closed my eyes and visualised what happened around me.

This 'practice' is pretty useful. Its like having a personal pensieve from Harry Potter's story. Get my drift? You review the day's events, see what went wrong, what should have been done or what not to.

Although the day itself would have concluded by then, it never hurts to think through and see how you can improve future situations or happenings.

PS: Don't do this too long & this is completely different from meditation. Just keep that in mind. I don't want any misunderstandings. Apologise for any grammar or vocabulary mistakes.

Anyway, heres a lil bit of fun stuff from me as a drummer. And thats not me but just for your entertainment (: (anyone interested in drumming?)

Hello people.

I had a little musing last night, or a mini nibbana if you will..

I thought to myself, What does the word family mean? And what does it take to be family?

From what I figured "family" does not mean you have to be bonded by blood or relations or anything of that sort.

Family is where the members inside care for you and stick through thick and thin regardless of the situation be it good or bad.

What do family members do during times of crisis? Do they help you? Do they chide you for making a wrong decision that got you into that situation? Do they solve the problem?

The correct answer is All of the above. You must be thinking, WHY CHIDE YOU FOR MAKING A WRONG DECISION!? Its because, what good is it that you don't learn from your mistakes? If you were not scolded for making the mistake. you probably will not realise why you made it in the first place!

BUT HEY... Waaaait a second.. This "family member" of yours sounds alot like a friend to me..

Which brings me my second point. What is a friend? Some say friends help you up when you are down, some say they share common interests, some say friends are the most important thing in your life. Well, people say alot of things. but the most important thing is that, many of the traits a friend has, a family member has too! So this blurs the line a little bit here. what line separates a family member from a friend?

This I leave for you to slowly figure out on your own.
With this, a little seed of wisdom has been planted in you.

But for me I have found a family which I call SBM :)

P.S. A real family can never be replaced by anyone. So care for them like never before.

Here ends the short sharing during my stressing period.
I had alot more in mind. but most of it flowed out after my due rest.

Hello all!

This saturday will be our first sharing of the year. I thought this song is good and i would like to share this with everyone. (:

Welcome to the family
We're glad that you have come
to share your life with us
as we grow in love and may we always be to you
what God would have us be a family always there
to be strong and to lean on. (Repeat)

May we learn to love each other
more with each new day
May words of love be on our lips in everything we say
May the Spirit melt our hearts
and teach us how to pray
that we might be a true family

Though it is a Christian song, but judging from a neutral perspective, it is referring to a community, a family that is always there.
I can relate this to SBM, i hope you can too (:

BTW, i sing this every wednesday with the kids in my childcare centre, HAHA!

Enjoy everyone (:

The Importance in YOU

As the new year begins with so much positivity after a successful end to a progressive 2009, the need to begin this new decade in a powerful, and meaningful way is the direction to go for us in the new frontier.

With the recently concluded spiritual countdown 2009, the Manjusri Buddhist Interact Club celebrating its return to focus in 1st CCA, and countless meetings to set the objectives of our group this year, the pace and tempo of development at the present moment is - consistent.

And hey, am i glad to hear, that the new committee's evolution has begun and the leaders of the houses being established. You know what that means? A fresh way to begin, a new movement from the new generation, and the immense happiness within me conquers even the darkest of personal conflicts i have for anyone in my life right now.

And so i sat down and figured about the plannings that we have aptly organized for the next half of the year, and what do we have?

- Inter-House Sports and Telematch 2010 - An initiative specially mooted by our captains
- 2nd CAMP L.I.O.N.S 2010 - The Nation Beckons for another United event.
- Reso-Nation PAC - The power of music, and the need for training, has begun.
- Ultimate Series Sports Camp 2010 -For the 2nd year running, we are challenging our limits.
- 2nd SBM Camp Exclusive 2010 - Just for U.

Other than major events that i have yet to single out, and community service still in the pipelines, you know what all these activities spell?

ONE POWERFUL WORD: BONDING
Opportunities are abound here, are you grasping it?
If you have zest and enthusiasm, you attract zest and enthusiasm. Life does give back in kind -Norman Vincent Peale

Not just house members getting to know their friends, but also knowing friends from other houses, and who are leading u in this new year, the committee members, and also, knowing how other youth groups are doing.
And when u do it with zest, u do it with enthusiasm, these two elements often reply to you in the most unique manners, and that is where you see fellow members, fellow leaders, smile when they see each other, and all angst and worries of your daily lives immediately diminished within the darkest abyss.
You would want to be around with us, an opportunity that you would love to grasp with all your might, that seniors guiding juniors, and juniors shining through, and the sincerety in your heart to reach out to everyone, firstly within your house, your group, den to many others in your own life. Leaders, as you reach out with zest, with enthusiasm, they shine within your hearts especially when u are sincere, and with the power of the triple gems in full guidance of your actions, you are able to reach out, and touch your members.

Amidst the fun, lets all not forget one thing.

A 2nd POWERFUL WORD: WILLINGNESS
to bond, we must be willing to make the step to bond.
Strength lies in similarities, not differences - Stephen Covey
Lets all not underestimate the strength of willingness. However, to muster, or to make sure u are willing to make the step to know other people, to want to bond, to want to learn, to always want to know that you have people always concerned in your well-being, just for the same matter, HEART is the truth of the matter. With the HEART to be willing, to reach out, take initiatives, in the simplest of tasks and duties, such as shaking someone's hands in appreciation, saying hello to a friend in SBM, smiling and waving in full acceptance of his/her presence, and also respecting seniors such as your parents, and sharing your problems with them. That, is invaluable in life. When you have a strength, so does your friend. And vice versa, for weaknesses. But Though your strengths may differ, and your weaknesses reflects the same, remember, it is the strengths that shine more than any other energy field that you as a person could conjure up with. Take the step, weave your strength and your friend's together, and possibilities would never cease to exist.
With the willingness to bond, what is the most powerful word that would reveal by itself?

THE MOST POWERFUL WORD: YOU
never underestimate yourself, your abilities, and your presence.
life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something in return by becoming more. - Anthony Robbins

All the activities, all the planning, every opportunity that we create, is solely for the purpose of having you around. Every single moment, and almost on a consistent basis, we worry, that even when you want to bond, and you are willing to reach out, that you are not around. Opportunities are missed, spiritual friends lament on the absence of you, activities built for you, gone down the drain in a fleeting moment.
In time, we have 24 hours a day, there are many ways we can manage our lifestyle, the only argument here is, whether we can be there to enjoy the willingness to bond. In retrospect, having the willingness to bond, yet not being around to execute that would render your wishes and hopes, wasted.
The call is, don't ever think that you ain't important, cos every single one of you are so important to us that we are willing to go the distance for you, in the hope that one day, you would learn about genuine sharing, and be able to return to the society by growing strong, in the spiritual, emotional, physical and social realms, after going thru our activities.

So, you ARE important, yes. every single one of you. Let me just name a few examples, Lijia and Victor Tan, with you around, you are bubbly and active , and always bring about the idea that with your running talents, you can represent TEAM SINGAPORE BUDDHIST Youths to fight for sporting honours with our friendly neighbours in Malaysia.
Elysia, Su Hiang, Jiahui, Hazel,Amanda, Mengkuan, Peijin, Yanye, and BIC members, with you around, and your power in cheers and happiness, you always liven up the spirits within SBM Youth, and at least we know, that BIC is in good hands and that it will continue to grow into a top class CCA!
Yixiang, you have been quietly supportive of us and we really appreciate it. We always know that with you around, the group has someone that really concerns herself with our activities and is willing to contribute, no matter what happens. Cheers to you.

Mina~ (everyone in japanese),
These are examples i mentioned, but nonetheless, it does not exclude anyone else that i have not mentioned, rather, it only shows that your personal talents are too immense that i would really want to explore. If its sports, sports camps and adventure related activities are always there for you to have fun, and organize! If you are the music kind, Reso-nation Performing Arts Circle is up, and you will be able to fulfill your dream of performing. If you like to cook, take photographs, videos, or community services, we always open our doors to take you in and allow you to help us organize too!

After all, i want to let you guys know, we plan this much, and in such a detailed manner, is only due to one singular factor:
YOU ARE IMPORTANT.
So do come, for sharings, for a start, and be present. That, is already success in the making.
Success: Your work, is to discover your work, and then give yourself to it - Buddha
Give the SBMYOUTH team, in it, myself and many others i see as equal no matter of what demographics, the opportunity as well as your commitment, to make your dreams, your wishes, your hopes in this youth group, come true.
We hope to see you soon! The first step? Its 16 January 2010, during our first social gathering, together with our adults at SBM's 28th Anniversary Celebrations. Then,
Our First Sharing and House Bonding Session: 23rd January 2010
Time: 10am
Venue: SBM Main Hall
See you all there! Remember, with the willingness to bond, and the power of being present, you have succeeded in providing us the opportunity to bond with you and join in the big family!
Cheers,
(B.B) Alvin

New Year Countdown!!!

On 31st December 2009, we had our annual celebration dinner at SBM organised by Eugene, Evelyn and their team of volunteers. The theme was "Kampong SBMY" which was meant to depict a cohesive and closely-nitted community like a "Kampong" village. Everyone came dressed up in their Kampong outfits! It became such a heartwarming dinner to see everyone sitting around an elongaed platform with four steamboat pots. Beside the dining area, some members were playing childhood games like rubber game, "pepsi-cola" and hop-scotch. It was a simple yet enjoyable dinner. Even the clear up was such a joy to see (view it in the video!). After the dinner, a bus was booked to ferry members to Brightshill Temple to attend a spiritual countdown to welcome 2010!

It was definitely a wonderful evening spent with this group of wonderful friends. Thank you all for being part of this SBMyouth family. Thank you for giving such wonderful memories that would last a lifetime. Thank you for being a spiritual friend. Lets welcome 2010 with new vision, hope, wisdom and compassion!
